I live in monsoon Kerala, the heart of the tropics. The climate is hot and humid during the day. Perspiration makes you very uncomfortable. Most people can’t afford air conditioners and I belong to that category. Although I have an air conditioner in my room, I rarely use it as electricity charges are as high as hiring a rich whore. And then most of the time I am not in my house and I am in my place at work or outdoors. One area of my body which becomes affected by the sweaty heat is my groin. The underwear sticks on to the body like a person struggling in underwater when drowning. To compound matters worse, sweat and no matter how soft the cotton is produces a nauseating odor, sick sweaty and wet leathery. When I am alone, I sometimes try to understand the smell. I have put my finger there and I have brought it to my nostril. How pathetic, how awful? It’s ironic that I have to live with this tropical hangover every day.
