The mythical Jesus is the one found in pictures, a long bearded, cloak wearing man. This mythical version contradicts the Historical Jesus. Though I am an Existential Nihilist Atheist, I for a long time have been fascinated by the personality of Jesus. What could be his personality in Psychoanalytic terms? I would like to categorize the personality of Jesus on the following psychoanalytic labels. Jesus’ personality is a THANATIC, NARCISSISTIC, MELANCHOLIC MASOCHISTIC personality type. What is THANATOS? Freud has connoted two drives for the human personality and those being EROS, the pleasure Principle and Thanatos, being the fond and morbid desire for death. How does the personality of Jesus satisfy the credentials of the THANATIC drive? Death has been an obsession for Jesus Christ. Death for the archetypal Jesus consists of ‘Literal Death, Spiritual Death and Cathartic death’. A literal death has been constructed by Jesus Christ into a fable of prose whereby one death can be accompanied by another, being alive in SIN and dying in hell. Here I would like to quote: Christ: “Yea shall know the truth and the truth shall see you free” We all know that after structuralism, deconstruction and postmodernism, the LOGOS or the inherent presence of truth to BE is a linguistic failure, a deep seated symptomatic pathological crisis in linguistics and Philosophy. Truth is an absent SIGNIFIED. Truth cannot be constructed as meaning and the veracity of TRUTH lies in its failure of having been given a meaning. Once the SIGNIFIED TRUTH IS stripped, Truth reveals only emptiness of meaning. A Spiritual Death is a one which echoes the concept of being born again as a Christian. It’s meaningful for a Christian to undergo the ritual of Water Baptism. A spiritual death also reveals a morbid fascination for the death drive. A spiritual death is a mental suicide of the mind. Even if one dies spiritually for being a Christian, one is shackled to the materiality of the BODY, its pleasures. Who does not want the material comforts of life? A cathartic death is a spiritual transformation where the Christian imitates Christ and tries to model his or her life for being virtuous and pure. In Christian life, the pleasure principle, the EROS becomes a limiting edifice. It’s for this very reason that the Philosopher Nietzsche proclaimed death of God and the affirmation of life through the WILL TO POWER. How can the personality of Jesus be narcissistic? When Jesus was a little boy his parents took him to the TEMPLE for sacred vows. Jesus started talking to the RABIS there and his parents resume their journey. Finding that they did not have Jesus, they came back and at that time Jesus remarked to them: ‘why do you trouble me when I am in my father’s house?’ Another example of Jesus being narcissistic can be traced to the story of the woman who was suffering from the issue of blood. This woman touched the garment of Christ and was healed, and Christ remarked: ‘Who has touched my garment?’ At a psychological level Jesus was always conscious that he is GOD, and that’s a typical tendency to be narcissistic. How was the personality of Jesus Melancholic? Melancholy in psychoanalytic terms means pining for a lost object that does not exist. If Jesus was GOD why should Jesus pray to the father? Jesus was suffering from melancholia of being divinely castrated by the LAW OF AN IMAGINARY FATHER. Personally I believe the concept of the Trinity to be in realm of the myth of impossibility. My question for Christian is where was the trinity when Christ was physically present on earth? Jesus’ personality was also masochistic. The act of dying was not personal for Jesus but for salvation, for the divine cleansing of sin by the blood. On being tortured on the cross of Calvary Christ was forgiving of his perpetrators and he remarks: “Father forgive them, for they know not what they have done”. No doubt the Historical Christ is a magnificent personality and he has sown the seeds of Communism by his Kingdom of God, Kingdom of Social Justice and Economic equality.
