I saw her many years ago back in 2005. Let me narrate the circumstance in which I happen to see her. I was teaching in an International School in Jakarta. One day the principal asked me to go and see the UN envoy there, the Head Communications and Culture that happened to be of Indian origin. Since I too being an Indian and he being appreciative of my persuasive powers, thought that I am suited to convince him to come and be the chief guest for the school day.
I reached there in the pleasant hours of the morning. It took a while for his secretary to usher me into his office. As I went into his office, I was greeted very warmly and soon I was asked to sit down. I looked at his table and to my surprise I found a strange looking doll and I realized that it was from the continent of Africa. What was most surprising about the doll was its eyes. There was a chorus of expressions at times I felt that the doll was pitying me. At other times, I felt that the doll was giving me a voodoo ritual stare. At other times I felt that the doll was looking at me in a helpless manner. I admire the art of the Black sculptor who crafted it so magically. I to my good luck was able to persuade the UN director of Culture and Communications to attend the school function. Was it due to the charm of the doll or due to my own powers of persuasion I still today don’t know? Many years have passed. Just when I think that I have forgotten the doll from my conscious memory, there alas to my surprise it keeps coming back. Sometimes I feel it is haunting me and sometimes I feel it benign like a friendly spirit.
