I would like to take the perspectives on the Ego from Hellenism, Ontology and Freudianism
The Hellenic ideal was a triumph of individuality. I am very much supportive of the ideal of Epicurean Hedonism which affirms: happiness is the pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain. Yes, pain cannot be avoided in the EGO but the EGO has the supreme will to triumph over pain. The Philosopher Nietzsche has developed the doctrine of the WILL TO POWER. From the Philosopher Heidegger we have the sacred concept for the EGO that is the presence of BEING. I would like to assert that the BEING is not a state but is always in the process of BEING that is being is processual. The EGO has to assert being with a YES in life. Being has to materialize the Philosophical concept of transcendence. Transcendence of BEING is to make the presence of meaning reside in a being as affirmation, negation, possession, satisfaction, ecstasy, dialogue and monologue. Instead of the transcendent structure being psychic, it is invested with the earthliness of being. I would say that the presence of being as a maker of meaning is DIONYSIAN-SATYRIC. The Dionysian is a concept that is borrowed from the Philosopher Nietzsche, that is from his theory of art and it encompasses, rhythm and music. Satyr is mythological beast, an attendant of God Dionysus and is characterized by drunkenness and orgiastic revelry. It is challenge for the EGO to sublimate the ID and subvert the rules and regulations of the SUPER EGO. The Assertion of the BEING as a maker of meaning is always one of the cathartic.
Everybody knows Nietzsche as a Philosopher. Julia Kristeva is a postmodern feminist philosopher. Here I would like to combine the thoughts of Nietzsche and Kristeva. Nietzsche in his theory of Art proclaimed tragedy is a combination of Dionysian and Apollonian elements. Dionysian elements are rhythm and ecstasy where as Apollonian elements are harmony and melody. Rhythm, Ecstasy, Harmony and Melody though exhibiting features of music and sexuality can be combined in the aesthetics of writing of texts, especially fiction and poetry. Both these elements, Dionysian and Apollonian combine to make art. Julia Kristeva in her study of language divided the language into the symbolic and semiotic realms. A semiotic realm of a text combines ecstasy and rhythm. A semiotic text overrules grammar and punctuation in the art of creation. For example, dance and music use semiotic modality. Semiotic traces of language are also present in Streams of Consciousness narratives. Ulysses by James Joyce is classic example of streams of consciousness narrative. The symbolic text is marked by order, precision, grammar and obeys the rules of the language with strict diligence. For example, a legal or a medical text can have Semiotic features. Literary writing encompasses both semiotic and symbolic realms. In this article I would like to say that Nietzsche’s Apollonian and Dionysian and Kristeva’s Semiotic and Symbolic realms portray similar features of thought. I hope this article would be a source of inspiration for the writer wanting to be creative.
