I am an Indian secularist and I deviate from the Indian principle of Secularism which says: one is free to practice a religion of one’s own choice and one is also free to propagate the religion. I am a confessional, existential, nihilist Atheist. Let me introduce the readers of the West to Lakshmi. She is the Indian Goddess of Wealth. Right now if you look at the Indian currency it has the head of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Indian Nation. Lakshmi instead of being regarded as a Hindu Goddess can be treated as a cultural icon and what’s the harm of inserting her also in the Indian currency. As a secularist, I would gladly welcome the move and I don’t regard her as sacred but just as a myth and her place has to be within the Indian currency. Let the currency have a feminine element and let it be balanced with the Yang. Indian currency is all masculine and patriarchical.
