Everyone is familiar with the term Catharsis. Catharsis as coined by the Philosopher Aristotle refers to emotional cleansing when one is watching tragedy and its fixtures like, terror, betrayal, murder etc. Here I would like to enlarge the scope of Catharsis and extend it to various aesthetic modes of appreciation that one undergoes through an aesthetic experience. I would like to introduce my own Neologisms for this purpose. The first Neologism that I coined is catharsthesis from catharsis and aesthesis (feeling of beauty). Catharsthesis is the combination of sensible and the intelligible realms of meaning and there’s an experience of varying emotions when one encounters an aesthetic object. Catharsthesis brings into being a transcendent emotional mythopoetic subjectivity. Catharsthesis transcends the normal sense of self and raptures it into music, a music of rhythm and ecstasy and passion that is akin to Philosopher Nietzsche’s Dionysian. I experience Catharsthesis when I read Philosopher Derrida’s “Of Grammatology” the Pioneering text on Deconstruction or when I read Borges’ “Labyrinth” I become filled with ecstatic rapture of being in a state of enthusiastic-curiosity. Next type of Catharsis is Catharliminal. Catharliminal from Catharsis and subliminal is being perceptive in appreciation. For e.g. I might see a beautiful woman and my experience would be Catharliminal.
