BEVCO represents alcoholic beverage corporation of the Govt. of Kerala State in India. It’s ironic to mention that BEVCO has been monopolized by the government and all retail sales of alcohol managed by government employees.
If one visits the BEVCO shops one can be dazzled by the sickest of a kaleidoscopes. The shops are in dire neglect and resemble a pig sty. The walls are splayed with incongruous, weather-dulled concrete. One has to go through a narrow tunnel which has walls on the side and metal roofing on the top. The construction is done to deter people from breaking the queue, which is jumping in from the sides of the queue to be their booze without falling into the queue.
If one goes to buy booze in the evening or on Saturdays and Sundays, one has to wait in a queue that is long canal. Many of the bums and average Joes break the queue and jump into the tunnel by an exhibition of steely muscle power. Then all of a sudden, the alarm wails and it is the police jeep. The mad crowd is quick to sense the danger of being beaten by the Police and run for safe-hideouts. There is a sea of eager humanity wanting to gulp booze and lie drunk at home or on the road (its sides) or on verandas.
One feels one has to desert all dignified traces of being human when one wants to become buyer of booze. The crowd that comes there are mostly proletarian but at times there exists petite bourgeoisie people. Of course one has also got the option of paying extra money to a lout without standing in a queue. Then one need not stand in a queue.
The govt. of Kerala to make matters worse has closed down all liquor serving hotels except five star outlets. This has increased the influx of alcoholics to their chosen land. Here the govt. is being authoritarian, a Draco who indulges in sadism. To make matters worse, the Govt. is gradually planning to phase out alcohol from the state. The rule of providing alcohol in only five star outlets shows the double mindedness and hypocrisy and lack of democracy in policy making. “What is good for me is also good for you”. To compound problems there’s lot religious puritans especially the upper echelons of church hierarchy who want this rule enforced like eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth. The govt. of Kerala takes exorbitant prices. Why is the govt. of Kerala a serpent giving freedom of choices for rich while at the same time denying freedom to the hoi polloi?
