Everybody knows Nietzsche as a Philosopher. Julia Kristeva is a postmodern feminist philosopher. Here I would like to combine the thoughts of Nietzsche and Kristeva. Nietzsche in his theory of Art proclaimed tragedy is a combination of Dionysian and Apollonian elements. Dionysian elements are rhythm and ecstasy where as Apollonian elements are harmony and melody. Rhythm, Ecstasy, Harmony and Melody though exhibiting features of music and sexuality can be combined in the aesthetics of writing of texts, especially fiction and poetry. Both these elements, Dionysian and Apollonian combine to make art. Julia Kristeva in her study of language divided the language into the symbolic and semiotic realms. A semiotic realm of a text combines ecstasy and rhythm. A semiotic text overrules grammar and punctuation in the art of creation. For example, dance and music use semiotic modality. Semiotic traces of language are also present in Streams of Consciousness narratives. Ulysses by James Joyce is classic example of streams of consciousness narrative. The symbolic text is marked by order, precision, grammar and obeys the rules of the language with strict diligence. For example, a legal or a medical text can have Semiotic features. Literary writing encompasses both semiotic and symbolic realms. In this article I would like to say that Nietzsche’s Apollonian and Dionysian and Kristeva’s Semiotic and Symbolic realms portray similar features of thought. I hope this article would be a source of inspiration for the writer wanting to be creative.
